1) 1st Article (of 232) Marketing Management

As a pure marketing consultant, not a salesman, not a businessman, not a coach- I have created some very effective tools for small and medium sized businesses. The implementation of my efforts, sometimes well paid, has had mixed results.

The main reason why they had poor results usually was because they did not put in the effort to implement the new programs. “New” was half of the reason. “Change” can be a hard item to swallow for those who resist change. When the motivation is there to change, it is usually from external pressures. (AKA catastrophes!)

The second reason why most resist change is the discipline that they fear comes with doing something that has methodology and the third reason for resistance to new is the fear that it won’t work and that brings disappointment. That says risk is not worth it because change and disappointment are hard to take. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard- “We don’t do radio ads, they don’t work.” Well then a lot of businesses are wasting money, for nothing! Their ads stink, is why they don’t work!

80% of small business start-ups fail in the first two years. Under-funded?

That’s the favorite response of management consultants who don’t have effective promotional skills. They rely on agencies who create funny ads. (“Hey, look at my funny ad”) Why- they missed sales projections. Pouring in more money won’t help!

Why- 1) because they missed having programs that work and/or 2) they did not have a disciplined process, monitored, managed effort, or 3) both!
Almost any business needs all 5 approaches to maximize results, otherwise known as profits. They are:

  1. Referral Program- (83% say they will refer, 11% do!
  2.   1st Timer program- (10% losses/year is normal; 6% die, need new ones)
  3. Effective Email Program- (loyalty and frequency; drive them to your-
  4. Effective Web Site- (gets them to call/come in, “Next Step Marketing”)
  5. Free coaching- (too many hats, new programs need discipline, monitoring)

I supply 1 and 2; icontact.com supplies a cost-effective email program; bluehost.com supplies a cost-effective web site program and, S.C.O.R.E. supplies free coaching from 12,400 retired execs.

This is why people spend tons of money on franchises. They have a proven business and are coached by the franchises! “managed business” means having marketing management!
In order to manage something, you have to have something to manage. This means “a marketing program” not just lowering the prices, as the vast majority of small businesses do. Even very large businesses go this route.

There are a hoard of marketing books at the book store and on-line. Most have some cost effective or effective programs to use, most are beyond the operating level of most small businesses, being aggressive direct sales or a national area. So, the issue is doing them. New means do something different.

When I was the marketing director at a heating-cooling contractor, we started with 150 maintenance agreements and 4 trucks. That’s about average for the industry. I write marketing articles for that industry. Two and a half years later, we had 5,000 MA’s and 16 trucks. This is because the boss was a businessman and wanted a managed marketing effort. I was there to test, adjust and turn the leads into sales. (HVAC techs are not salesmen) The handouts had to generate sales or inquires by themselves.

Since then, I have consulted with scores of contractors and never has there been even close to that level of success. The main reason was that the owner was usually a tech and didn’t know how to manage marketing. I supplied them with a CD for review. One contractor paid me $500 three times to come in and retrain his techs on PMA’s. They went out and signed up hundreds each time I re-trained them. It was not necessary if he had taken control of the offerings and the numbers. At the first place, one of our techs went from last to first in one week because the numbers for each techs results were on the blackboard.

The point is, change is both uncomfortable and time consuming for a lot of small businessmen, especially if they wear 4 hats already. So, what is the obvious answer- a coach.
A study by Sherpa Marketing- 32% of small businessmen do not use anybodies methods or help, otherwise known as “my way or the highway.” I have a explanation of why they avoid others later. The opposite is an expensive but successful franchise. There really are many mid-level programs. My 4 free added values (Plan A) can be utilized and you can get professional coaching for free. S.C.O.R.E. has 12,400 retired execs, and, my 2 free lead generation programs are perfectly suited for this kind of a situation, programs that are managed. As are the optional 9 programs in Plan B.

Any new effort needs 2 things- 1) discipline and 2) monitoring. This is why free coaching is so important. They will fulfill both needs, I supply programs.

Coaching

You have three choices for getting a coach.

  1. 1st- acquire it from within. This can be low cost but it is a matter of putting someone into a place that they never have been in before.
  2. 2nd- Hire a commercial coaching company. (expensive)
  3. 3rd- S.C.O.R.E- 12,400 retired execs, free, unlimited.

It takes resources to do anything that needs being done. Time, effort, money. The old phrase “nothing happens until a sale is made” says that marketing is king and should be taken very seriously.

“You can’t effectively change something you can’t measure!!” Businessmen and women are already busy + don’t have experience doing new programs. To start up something new can be a load; emotionally and physically. So, you have to recognize and acknowledge that “if you want to change things in your life, then you have to change some things in your life.” (It’s a law!)

  • Media _ Typical Monthly Costs
  • Radio $1,000-$2,000 per month
  • Newspaper $2,000-$4,000 per month
  • Yellow Pages $2,500-$4,500 per month

It takes money to make money. The national average for acquiring a new customer is $18! It costs a lot more for industries like financing, magazine subscriptions, insurance and other markets.

You don’t have to spend that much or buy a franchise unless you don’t have an effective web site and an effective e-mail program and affordable programs that work.
Coaching, which is also critical, starts after the marketing approach is decided upon. This can come from within or can come from a marketing professional that has access to proven programs. You then need a pro who knows how to be a coach, not a drill sergeant.

Also, he/she needs to know what it takes to get it done, without offense.

The important issues are:
1) Do they know what they are doing?
2) Do they have good bedside manner?
3) Do they have a plan? (we deliver the plan!)
Also- They should be able to coach email newsletters
They should be able to coach printed handouts.
They should be able to coach phone efforts.
They should be able to coach and measure web site efforts.

It takes commitment, managing, an implementable marketing plan and effort to be successful. Missing any of these will limit your growth!
Make it a priority and allow time and effort to develop a working plan. This can put you in control of you future and your profits.

In 30 years of marketing consulting, I have observed that there are three kinds of execs or managers. 1 and 2 are not businessmen.

1) Mom and Pop (small size business)
2) Tech run business (small to mid size business)
3) Businessman/woman (mid to large size business)
Two things are needed for “1” and “2”-
1) a marketing plan with definite goals and procedures.
2) a coach to help the manager with many hats to succeed.

You can, in effect, get the benefits of the two important aspects of franchises by using my first two free marketing programs (Referral Cards and 1st Timer Cards, and then 227 other marketing article approaches) and by having a free coach to monitor and manage without spending hundreds of thousands on a franchise. You also need an effective email program from icontact.com.

In addition to having the programs, if you are #3 on the business types (big or want to become) I recommend you retain the services of www.arcion .com to help you to have an important effective web site. (It’s easy to drive them to a site) eg. “There’s 3 things you need to know before you buy a computer. They will save you time, grief and money. Don’t purchase before you go to our site and see them.” bluehost.com is a top 10 web hosting company I recommendation that I use, S.C.O.R.E.+ Acrion can be effective and affordable.
An ad writers job is to make consequences of not going there unacceptable!

Here’s the deal- “What if you could pay less for the same thing? You will save money. What if you can pay less and get more, it’s win-win. Thus, you can thus get paid to make more money. And also, if better results cost less, then you (the merchant and end-user) are already paying for the better service in more expensive efforts without getting what you want. Just redirect some of the same money you’re going to spend anyway and get more profits for it.” Don’t waste money and your future profits!

“There is no gain so certain as that which comes from preserving what you already have.” Publilicus Syrus, 79 A.D. (“a penny saved………….”)

I recommend you sign up for my four free marketing tools at morenewcustomers.net and, call icontact.com (877-820-7837 for a cost-effective email program. (critical for loyalty + frequency)
